Pinol Portal Blanco, Terra Alta, Spain, 2021
We know this wine as a Grenache Blanc, but in the Catalan region it is called Garnatxa (Garnacha elsewhere in Spain) Blanca. This version is 90% and balanced out by the addition of Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. The Terra Alta region is just south of Barcelona in the highlands of Tarragona, which is the birthplace of the Garnacha Blanca grape (not the Southern Rhone). It’s a lively wine with a lot going on.
Nose: Meyer lemon, green apple, ginger, chalky minerals
Palette: apples, pears, honeysuckle, gentle spice on the finish
Pairing: gratins, chicken pot pie, fishes, oysters. Cheeses: Valdeon, Serena, Monte Enebro, Morbier, and other stinky cheeses.
Cellar Piñol has a rich family legacy of winemaking. 2ndgeneration Teresina and her husband Juan grew the winery over the 50 years they led the cellar until 1990, with their son taking over soon after. The lastest notes I could find mark father Juan still with us at 104 years-old in 2021. Cristina Borrull has been making the wine since 2018.
